SPIbelt Large Pocket You’re gonna want to run on the beach. And maybe a little bit in the surf. You really don’t want the ocean to swallow up your cell phone, or your rental car key fob. This waist belt is much less annoying than strapping your phone to your arm so you can listen to tunes. It comes in 19 colors and patterns.

Amphipod Xinglet Vest If you are coming to Maui from “da mainland”, you are going to have at least a 2 hour time change, and up to 6 hours coming from the East Coast. That adds up to jetlag, and west-bound jetlag means waking up before dawn. What better way to watch the sunrise in Maui than while on a beach run? It’s the best time of the day to run here, it’s as cool as it gets. If you are going to head out in the darkness, you need to make sure the sleepy locals driving to work can see you. This vest is super bright, yet lightweight. You could skip a shirt altogether and show off your gym bod in this vest!

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp If you are running wayyyy before sunrise, it’s not enough just for the local drivers to be able to see you. You need to see where you are going! This headlamp is the best in the business for brightness, lightweight, durability, and long battery life.

It gets pretty hot on Maui. The highs are in the 80’s just about every day of the year. That might be a lot hotter than your body is used to. You’ll need to hydrate more than usual to enjoy your running. Be sure to pick up one or more of these hydration systems:
Nathan SpeedDraw Plus Insulated Flask This 18oz bottle keeps your water cool, AND has room to store your phone/keys/gels. It’s easy to carry, and you can squirt water from it, rather than fiddling with the spout.

Nathan Peak Waist Pack If you hate carrying something while running (I do), then this is the option for you. This 18oz bottle keeps your water cool, AND the belt has room to store your phone/keys/gels. It doesn't shift and bounce around while you run.

Maui Revealed Guidebook - This is THE guidebook for Maui. Nothing else even comes close. The author lives in Hawaii, and spends his entire year traveling around, doing touristy stuff, exploring, eating, trying different hotels. He updates the book every few years. (This is the FEB 2018 edition) This guidebook is so comprehensive that locals have gotten angry at some of the “secret hikes” he has revealed to the public. Even locals like me keep a copy in their car for info on sides of the island they don’t get to very often. You can of course buy this on Maui, but only at the full retail price.
